Are My Headaches the Result of Untreated Jaw Issues?

If you’re experiencing frequent headaches and can’t seem to pinpoint the cause, your jaw may be to blame. TMJ disorder, which affects the temporomandibular joints (the hinge-like joints that connect your jaw to the rest of your skull), can be a hidden culprit behind persistent headaches and migraines. However, understanding how TMJ treatment can lead to head pain—and how treatment might offer relief—could be the first step toward feeling better. Here’s what you need to know.

What TMJ Headaches Usually Feel Like

The muscles that control your jaw are closely connected to those in your face, neck, and head. When the jaw joints become strained or misaligned, it can put extra pressure on these muscles, leading to tension headaches. Bruxism (teeth grinding) can also add to the strain, triggering inflammation and discomfort that extends well beyond the jaw.

You may feel dull, aching pain in the temples or sides of your head, pressure behind your eyes, pain that worsens when chewing or opening the mouth wide, or headaches accompanied by jaw stiffness, popping, or clicking. Unlike classic migraines, TMJ headaches are usually more consistent in intensity and may be accompanied by facial soreness or even neck tension.

Finding Relief Through TMJ Treatment

The good news is that many patients report having fewer headaches after seeking treatment for TMJ disorder. Depending on your specific symptoms and the root cause of your TMJ issues, some possible solutions include things like a custom oral appliance to be worn at night or even orthodontic treatment to correct a misaligned bite. BOTOX can also be used to relieve the tension in these muscles, as well as other forms of specialized treatment. Of course, physical therapy and jaw exercises can also be employed at home for additional relief.

By addressing the source of the jaw strain, TMJ treatment can help break the cycle of tension and reduce the frequency and intensity of headaches. If you suspect your headaches might be linked to TMJ disorder, don’t delay in getting help—things won’t resolve on their own!
