Swollen Gums? Call Your Dentist

should-I-be-worried-about-swollen-gumsDo your gums look a little puffy? Maybe they bleed some when brushing or flossing your teeth? You have symptoms of gingivitis, which is the earliest stage of gum disease. Although swollen gums might not be too alarming, it is an issue that can turn into tooth loss quickly. Gum disease is also linked to serious and potentially deadly health issues. Here’s why gum inflammation isn’t anything you want to ignore.

What Causes Swollen Gums?

Gum inflammation not caused by an injury often results from an infection. Poor oral hygiene habits cause plaque and tartar buildup, which harbor bacteria that infect the gum tissue. Gingivitis is the first stage of the infection, which can progress to advanced periodontitis with no treatment.

Risks of Untreated Gingivitis

Gingivitis causes red, swollen, and bleeding gums, which are easy to treat and won’t cause any lasting problems. However, with no treatment, the infection can destroy the supporting structures of your teeth, including your jawbone, ultimately leading to tooth loss.

Research has found gum disease to increase the risk of many health issues because bacteria can enter the bloodstream. There are connections between gum disease and a higher likelihood of cardiovascular disease, respiratory illnesses, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetic complications, and more.

Treating Gum Inflammation

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 50% of Americans have gum disease, making it a leading cause of tooth loss.

Your oral and general health doesn’t have to fall victim to the infection. Contact your dentist at the first sign of gum inflammation and improve your oral hygiene at home.

Your dentist will examine your mouth to create a personalized treatment plan. A good dental cleaning is often all that’s needed to stop gingivitis in its tracks. You may require more frequent cleanings and checkups for a while to ensure the infection has been resolved.

Protect Your Smile from Gum Disease

You can keep your mouth and body healthy by following a few simple tips:

  • Brush Twice Daily: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and nonabrasive toothpaste to brush for 2 minutes at least twice daily.
  • Floss Daily: Floss every day to remove food particles and plaque from areas your toothbrush can’t reach.
  • Use Mouthwash: Use an antimicrobial mouthwash to kill any bacteria left behind by brushing and flossing.
  • Lower Risk Factors: Don’t smoke or drink a lot of alcohol.

Besides caring for your smile at home, visit your dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and checkup. They’ll keep your teeth clean and healthy while monitoring your smile for signs of gum disease.

If you develop any symptoms of gingivitis between your regular appointments, don’t wait to schedule an appointment with your dentist.
