4 Foods Notorious for Sticking Between Teeth

Imagine that you’re enjoying steak and broccoli during a dinner date only to have a piece end up stuck between your pearly whites. How embarrassing. Having something wedged like that can be both irritating and frustrating, but did you know it could also put your dental health at risk? If you damage your gums or teeth trying to remove it, you might end up having to call your dentist. Keep reading to learn about 4 foods known to be troublesome, so you can avoid the risk down the road.

Food #1: Popcorn

You have likely already experienced popcorn kernels jamming between your teeth, whether at a movie theater with friends or at home watching your favorite true-crime documentary. It’s easy for the thin shells to slide into place, and difficult to remove them. They’re small enough that they’re hard to reach and can sometimes even get underneath the gums. If you’re unable to safely remove it, it’s time to contact your dentist’s office.

Food #2: Ribs

Ribs are well known for their delicious melt-in-your-mouth flavor. Digging into this barbecue favorite can be satisfying at the moment, but afterward, you might regret it. Tough, chewy meats are infamous for leaving strands behind. Some people think eating it with a fork instead of off the bone will help, but unfortunately, it doesn’t really make much difference.

Food #3: Raspberries

Although eating a balanced diet is healthy and encouraged, some seedy fruits like raspberries can cause issues. Did you know that an average raspberry has around 120 seeds? That’s how many opportunities each one has to plant a seed caught between your pearly whites.

Food #4: Potato Chips

These greasy nibbles are less likely to force bits between your teeth but certainly pile into the grooves on top of them. Do you remember the last time you polished off a bag? Likely, your teeth were covered in starchy clumps from chomping them down. You can drink a glass of water to help rinse it away, and if you find it unpleasant, remember to avoid this snack in the future.

If you’ve been indulging in any of these foods and realize something has lodged where it shouldn’t, be careful trying to remove it. Using forks, knives, or other household items to get it out could chip teeth or scrape your gums. If you’re having a hard time, feel free to call your dentist. They have the experience and instruments needed to pull it out safely so you can enjoy your next meal without worry.
